Dramatic rescue saves TV reporter: As a longtime traffic reporter for KFMB Channel 8, KSON-FM and other outlets, Jo Eager is used to riding in helicopters over San Diego.

As fugitive shows, life can change at any time: Two weeks after her arrest, I still can't get Susan LeFevre out of my mind. Not because she was a fugitive, though I do retain my youthful fascination with Dr. Richard Kimble.

Horn is on the wrong trail with road plan: Unless it wises up – and mans up – Valley Center is going to get blindsided by its neighbor and county supervisor, Bill Horn.

Up close and personal wasn't needed by Smith in matter of top pick: A.J. Smith calls April “Liar's Month.” And he's right, of course. NFL general managers find it terribly difficult to tell the truth when it isn't April, let alone draft time, when prevarication becomes the verbal brush work of Michelangelo and Da Vinci. In this case, A.J. didn't really lie. He just didn't tell the truth.

Spygate's closure apt to be lacking: Much as we've wearied of the whole sordid Spygate saga, you can't get closure by decree.

A bitter harvest for Gagne, Brewers: Heaven knows Eric Gagne has made himself an easy target. Especially for hitters. Walkers, too. Heck, for everybody.

It's early, yes, but rank Pats No. 1 . . . and Bolts No. 2: Seven different teams have represented the NFC in the past seven Super Bowls, which suggests how markedly matters can change from year to year in the NFL.

'Black Magic' does the trick: Next week, ESPN interrupts your March Madness for some “Black Magic.” If you're a college basketball fan, or even just a student of American history, this two-night, four-hour documentary is worth your time. You'll learn something, I guarantee it. At times, you'll get angry. At a couple junctures, you'll get a lump in your throat. This is powerful stuff.

Mothers still eye equality on issues in workplace: It surely must have warmed the hearts of American mothers when Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., stood on the floor of Congress last week and offered a resolution supporting the goals and ideals of Mother's Day.

Can McCain appeal to Hispanic voters maintain?: For many conservatives, John McCain is not their favorite Republican. They think he's built a career at their expense, painting them as fools and bigots. They resent his holier-than-thou attitude. And they're not inclined to trust anyone who has been so fawned over by the national media.

Just who is the real Republican?: Logos? We love 'em. Whether it's McDonald's golden aches drawing attention to the 187 billion hamburgers, or thereabouts, passed through those little windows. Or Ford's simple script logo, now more than 100 years old. Or a cuddly infant imploring us not to squeeze the Charmin.

Girl Scouting is out in front on leadership: I remember being a Girl Scout. It was just something most girls did when I was growing up. It was a way to hang around with my friends after school. We all waited 15 minutes after the last bell, and then we'd walk over to the Girl Scout Hut on our school playground. That's what we called it. Of course, boys called it the Boy Scout Hut.

'Sex: The revolution': Birds do it, bees do it ...: Barbara Walters had an affair with a married U.S. senator. Former New York governor Eliot Spitzer consorted with a high-priced prostitute. Baseball great Roger Clemens is battling allegations that he had an affair with a 15-year-old singer, and actor Rob Lowe and his wife are being sued by their nannies for sexual harassment.

On they go, as road gets steeper: My initial reaction after spending a few hours with Hank and Jayne Slade last week was: Why did Alzheimer's happen to such a lovely couple?

When our readers become editors: A. Some of our armchair editors are so eagle-eyed it's scary. B. Some are grammar mavens, but they play by different rules than those in The Associated Press Stylebook.
