SHORT TAKES: CITY EDITION
Trustee cleared to run as write-in

UNION-TRIBUNE

May 17, 2008

SAN DIEGO: San Diego school board member Luis Acle's bid to get on the June primary ballot as a write-in candidate received a boost this week from City Attorney Michael Aguirre.

In an opinion issued Tuesday, Aguirre determined that a write-in candidate who qualifies for the June 3 primary can advance to the November runoff if “he garners a single vote and merely places among the top two vote-getters in the June primary.”

There is only one other person seeking the seat.

Acle was disqualified earlier as a candidate after he failed to collect enough valid signatures for the June primary. He's now reviving his re-election campaign as a write-in candidate.

Acle must collect 200 valid signatures from registered voters within the area he represents, District D, by Tuesday. The district covers a large swath of central San Diego, including Golden Hill, North Park, Sherman Heights and Barrio Logan.

If he collects enough valid signatures, Acle will face off with Richard Barrera, regional organizer with United Healthcare Workers.

Coronado bridge benefit is tomorrow

SAN DIEGO: Get ready to run across the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge.

The Navy's 22nd Bay Bridge Run/Walk benefiting Navy Quality of Life Programs takes place at 8 a.m. tomorrow.

The route begins at Harbor Drive and Fifth Avenue, continues onto the bridge and ends at Coronado's Tidelands Park.

The four-mile run/walk affords the only opportunity to cross the bridge on foot this year.

All participants will receive a ticket to the May 25 Padres baseball game at Petco Park. Registration is available online at mwrtoday.com. There is no race-day registration, and the event will be capped at 8,000 participants.
