Messages of Thanks 2003: Part 1

I am thankful for a young child and a school system that encourages volunteer mentoring. I have been working with the same person for three years strengthening his reading skills. We are different sexes, different races, and I am older than his grandmother, and yet we are a team. I am thankful for his unconditional acceptance of me, his willingness to work hard toward improvement, his daily enthusiasm and the sparkle in his eyes each time we meet. I have 8 grandchildren, none of whom live in California. Thus, my mentee is special.
Elly Leslie

I'm very thankful for the Father I have in my life. He's always been there for us no matter what the problems, good or bad. Ever since my mom died in 1989 and before, dad's been the rock of the family. She was the love of his life and always will be. I think back of all he has given up just for us kids. Even now he still goes out of his way for us. I have had many times I thought I'd never get thru the day and some how he knows and is there for me. He would help a stranger if they need help. He is the rock that keeps me going and always will. When I talk of him to my friends they all say I'm really lucky to have him and I can only agree with them with all my heart. Thanks dad for all you have done and continue to do.

Luann Saxton

In giving thanks I am thankful for my children: Reyna Hano, Beverly Wininger, Don jr., Sandee Archer and Samuel Martin and their children-as these have visited their Grandma in this Nursing Center which keeps an old person alive and makes me feel good and loved.

Gloria Martin

It was seven years since my husband of 50 years passed away. Unexpectedly I was given a comforter, companion and protector-all in one. I am never lonely or sad, as she is so playful and entertaining. This 81-year-old is so thankful to have Egypt, my American Staffordshire Bull Terrier who weighs 51 pounds and loves to lie in my lap and who is my caregiver. My family loves her too and go about their daily tasks knowing I am in good "paws." You bet we're thankful!

Phyllis Chase

My name is Peter Cruz and I am writing what I'm thankful for. I am thankful for trees because they give oxygen, pencils, and other stuff we use. But the one thing I'm thankful for is the oxygen that the trees give us. Trees also give homes to nature, like birds, catapillars, and even more. Some make food too like leaves for a catapillar. P.S. This is really true.

I'm thankful there is earth, because we wouldn't be here on earth. We wouldn't be alive on earth at all. Earth helps us to live on earth. Earth makes us very happy. Earth made everything on earth. We all should thank the earth for helping us. Earth made school for the kids. I hope that the earth helps the people and kids that live on streets. Earth helps every person earth. Earth makes houses for us to live in. We all need to thank the earth for making us here to live and be a big family.

How many ways can you think of that your mouth helps you? I am thankful for my mouth because whenever I need my mouth it comes in handy. I need my mouth when I want money from the Tooth Fairy, when I really need to breathe, when I feel like talking, and when I need to eat.

The two most important reasons why I'm thankful for my mouth are: 1) to breath and 2) to eat. When I was little, I couldn't breathe because of asthma problems, and my mouth helped me clear my lungs by letting fresh air come in. When I eat my mouth is important to me because it is the first step of the digestive system. My mouth helps me to taste and chew up the food.

Without a mouth, I don't think I could survive.

There are so many things to be thankful for this season. We live in a nation built on the freedom to choose -- how we worship, how we continually expand our knowledge through education and study, how we care for our bodies through good nutrition, how we treat our neighbors. We have the wisdom of the ancient prophets and wise sages handed down through the millennia through the written word. The field of science has discovered numerous ways to improve our health and well-being.

When we look at the communications developed to bring the world into our homes, we feel and experience awe. When we view astronauts and rockets traveling to the outer limits of our outer space and we build telescopes that reach into the galaxies, how can we not feel deep gratitude to be living at this time?

Perhaps the most profound feeling I experience is the gratitude of a kind, forgiving Supreme Being who loves us greater than we could ever comprehend.

These are the things I ponder over this season of Thanksgiving with my family.
(Mrs.) Yvonne McClain
Coronado

Thanksgiving is a time for remembrance and a time to love one another. I am especially thankful for my mom and dad for without them I would probably be somewhere on the streets in Mexico. They have come to love me in a way that no one else could do. Thanksgiving is a way to tell and show our peace and happiness to all who are around. I myself do not know what I would do without my family and friends for they are the ones who have cared for me and put a smile on my face when I am down.

Rosario Torres
Grade 8
St. Vincent de Paul School

This Thanksgiving I will be thankful for many things. I am very thankful for my family: that they are all safe and healthy. With all that has occurred and is still occurring today in the world - with all of its fires and wars bringing home tragedies to people - I am very thankful that it has not physically affected me or any of my loved ones. I am thankful that I have a home to go to with a beautiful family that takes good care of each other. But most importantly, I am thankful for everyday that I have lived. I am glad that I have an opportunity to be thankful for something, and I know that there will be more to come.

Mara Alioto
Grade 8
St. Vincent de Paul School

What things are you thankful for? For some people that's hard, but for me that's easy. Having a family or a home is something we should be thankful for. Some people don't even have a family or home to go to or food. To have love and trust in other people and to be educated, but most importantly to have freedom to do what you think.

Ian Logan
Grade 8
St. Vincent de Paul School

I am thankful for my family for always being there for me. My friends for always putting a smile on my face. I am thankful for my house that I have a place to live. I am thankful for girls. I am thankful for video games. I am thankful for school so I can learn. Most of all I am thankful for God for giving me faith.

Anthony Holland
Grade 8
St. Vincent de Paul School

During the Thanksgiving season it is time to think about what you are thankful for, that is why most family come together for Thanksgiving. I am personally thankful for many things, but I would just narrow it down to two things that I am thankful for. God, or having God to believe in, is something I am thankful for because God gets me through the toughest times of my life. My family, which I am thankful for, backs me up through life and through important events. So God and my family are two most important things I am thankful for.

Tony Reyes
Grade 8
St. Vincent de Paul School

As Thanksgiving time rolls on in and people ask me what I'm most thankful for I have to stop and think because there are an immense amount of people and places that I am thankful for. I am thankful that my house and my neighbors' houses were not burned down in the recent firestorm. I'm also thankful that as my dad was working to put out the firestorm he did not get hurt. Even though my friend Whitney's housed burned down I am thankful that she and her family are safe. On Thanksgiving day I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and has something to be thankful for

Emily L.

I am Thankful for my parents. They always pay attention to me and they take great care of me. My mom takes the time to bring me to school. I always look at the streets and there are many students walking by themselves without their parents or guardians. When I get home after school, my mom has my meal ready. Many kids when they get home from school there is nothing to eat.

I am very thankful that I have a mom and a dad. Many kids wish to have parents. I am very thankful that I can go to a school, where I can learn and get better at many things. I am thankful because I am getting a good education in my house.

My parents do not smoke, don't drink, they don't use drugs, and they don't say bad words. I am really thankful that I have such great parents.

I love my mom, and am so thankful for her. She always cares for me and helps me through the tough times.

When someone calls me a name or if I get in trouble, or get in fights she makes me "all better."

I can still remember when I was three years old she would put me to bed. She would always sing me a song and lullaby me to sleep. I will do that with my own child someday, in honor of my mom.
Latasha Williams
Imperial Beach

I'm thankful for my family because they love me. When I'm feeling down they always cheer me up. When I have a rough day they make me happy. I'm thankful that they buy me clothes to wear, toys, and school supplies, because I love school. I'm thankful that we have a home to live in. I'm thankful that we are not poor. We have food to eat, a roof over our heads, and plenty of love to go around.

Joseph R. Nerona

I am thankful for my mother having me. She gave me life. I'm thankful that she left me with my Aunt Marissa to take care of me while she worked in Japan. She sent money for us to buy things that we really needed, while I was a baby. I'm thankful she came back every six months to visit me. She sent me stuff from Japan and sent me money. She came back for me when my papers were done, so I could come here to America. She came to America after she got married and got her papers and we're still a family.

Rosein Camacho
Central Elementary School

I'm thankful for my brother because if he wasn't born, I would be really sad, and probably rude too. If Alex wasn't born, I wouldn't have anyone to play with. I would be alone. I would be bored all day long. That's why I am so thankful for my little brother.

Jackie Montero
Imperial Beach

I'm thankful for everything I have. It's sad that I have a home, and some don't. I am very thankful for that. Some people don't have food to eat, I'm thankful for that. I'm very thankful that I have a cool teacher, and I get to go to school each day. Some children don't even get to go to school, but instead they have to work or fight in wars. I'm thankful for my family. Some children never even get to know their moms or dads, I'm glad I have mine!

Judith Corona
Imperial Beach

I am very thankful for having two parents. They are always there. If I get hurt my mom or dad are there to help me. They also care for me a lot and they want me to go to college. They love me, and I love them. When I grow out of my old clothes they get me new ones. If my mom or dad were in the war, I would pray every day, and hope they would be safe. I am thankful that they are not. I am thankful that I am not starving like many people in other countries, especially the children. I am thankful for having shelter at night, and for being healthy every day.

Stephane Zuezada

What Thanksgiving means to me is when an entire family gathers at a feast to give their thanks to many things. Thanksgiving also means when the Pilgrims and the Native Americans settled in peace. This is what Thanksgiving means to me.

Chris De Guzman

To me, Thanksgiving is giving thanks for all the things I have like parents, a home, food, and clothes. To me, it is also a day when my family comes together and has a turkey dinner. I give thanks for all the stuff I have. That is what Thanksgiving means to me.

Christian Preciado

Thanksgiving means a lot to me around Thanksgiving my sister stays with us more and it gets very pleasant. I remember what happened many years ago and I'm glad because it shows peace. I get ham and we all are happy. When we eat we give thanks for our meal. That is what Thanksgiving means to me.

Brenda Agell

I think Thanksgiving means to thank God. For the food he gave to us. And thanks that all the family is together. And to not fight -- like the Indians (who helped) the persons and gave them food because they needed it. I think Thanksgiving is to give to the person in need.

Alan Gilbert

Emory Elementary

To me Thanksgiving means to thank God. To thank him for the thing he gives us. Thank him for giving us the opportunity to live a happy life. To thank him for the family I have and to thank him that I have the bestest setpfather there is because he gives my family all we need. That's what Thanksgiving means to me.

Anahi Nunez

Thanksgiving means to me is seeing my family that I don't get to see every day. I like when my family gets together so all of us can get together and talk about what's been happening to us and what's going on and more. Everybody gets together and my tios are the ones who make the turkey. Before we sit down my Tio David says grace and then everybody sits down and eats.

Bianca Lujan
6th Grade
Emory Elementary

What Thanksgiving means to me is that people who get together and feast on delicious food or people who thank God for the kindness that the Pilgrims and the Indians had, to share and help each other. To some people it might mean a good fresh Turkey and just eating but it's not. Thanksgiving is different for people. To people it's not important what it means to me but what it means for them.

Myrella Pillado
6th Grade
Emory Elementary

To me Thanksgiving means that I get to get together with relatives I hardly get to see. It also means that me and my family thank God for the food we have and water we have. It also means to me that that's the only day I can eat turkey and remember that the Pilgrims and Native Americans invented Thanksgiving. That's what Thanksgiving means to me.

Abril Pillado
6th Grade

It means people come together and share and help all the people need it. Thanksgiving is very fun to do because you feel really happy and helpful. I'm very glad to have Thanksgiving.

Brandon Griebel
6th Grade

Thanksgiving means to me is we could see people that we never seen before and give thanks to God because we pray to God and thank him for our food. My uncle Albert and my aunt Annette and their children give homeless food for Thanksgiving and when ever they need to. When we eat all of us takes a turn saying any prayer. Then we play a Thanksgiving game. After that we and everyone says a song about God.

Brianna Romo

I think Thanksgiving means to me is all of my friends and family is gather all around the world for Thanksgiving because we all believe in God for the dinner we have and to me I think it is all about the friends and family being there right with us and one of the person is God.

Brian Geamon

Is a happy time for family to be together. I also am able to see my aunt I never really see. It also means a lot to me because of the food. I think it is a special moment. Thanksgiving means a lot to me

Carlos Hernandez

What Thanksgiving means to me is getting to be with my family. On Thanksgiving my family and family friends help each other cook all day. We thank each other and God for giving each other joy in life. We talk about all the funny things we did over the years. Also the happiest things, saddest things and the greatest things. Thanksgiving for us is a time to look at all the best things in life and just to be thankful for our families. Thanksgiving is a fun time to think back at all for the good and bad choices and thank one another for helping each other. Thanksgiving is what part of the year is best so I can think of all the things I have such as clothes, a bed, a pillow, a house, a healthy meal, a good family, good friends, a car, an inspiration, etc.

Celena A. Rivera
6th Grade
Emory Elementary

Thanksgiving an almost forgotten holiday, between all of the riffraff. This holiday is special in its own way. No presents, not much decoratives, mostly just you and your family. This holiday is almost always looked over between Halloween and Christmas, Wal-mart can't sell it much.

But there is one special thing that's important to me. I only get to see my relatives, besides my grandma and grandpa, maybe once or twice a year but on Thanksgiving I sometime get to see them which really means a lot to me. That's what Thanksgiving is to me, in my point of view.
Jenna Howell
6th grade
Emory Elementary

It means to me that the Indians and the Pilgrims stop fighting and just sat down to feast like normal family. And it was the way it brought us together and not separated from one another so that's why we are together thanks to the Indians and the Pilgrims.

Crystal Flores

Emory Elementary

Thanksgiving means to me is giving stuff to other people who need them, like the homeless and orphans. It lets them see that you like helping other people. So do the right thing, help the homeless. That's why I like Thanksgiving.

Coral Flores
6th grade
Emory Elementary

To me Thanksgiving means to thank God. I thank God because he is the one that made the food and the world. And gave me this wonderful family that I love so much. I thank God because he gives me the food every day. I thank God because he made me a boy.

Eric Lopez
6th Grade
Emory Elementary

Thanksgiving means when the Pilgrims gave thanks to the Indians for helping them and giving them food. A celebration to remember what the Indians did for us. Helped us by growing crops and vegetables, because it was in the winter. They also gave them food when the Pilgrims thanked the Indians for giving them food on the same day they thanked them. Every November we celebrate it because it is a holiday.

Jonathan Chavez
6th Grade
Emory Elementary

Thanksgiving Day is to thank God for the food and everyday life he has giving to me and my family all the year. Thanksgiving also is where all my family is together. We celebrate by cooking a nice dinner meal and everyone gets to help. We eat Turkey, ham, mash potatoes with gravy, and dinner rolls. My mother cooks her secret recipe of cheesecake. We also sing and play games and win prizes. It's almost like a birthday party but this one is special to me.

Cindy Soria
6th Grade

I think Thanksgiving is important because the family is happy. When it is Thanksgiving you eat and you play. Sometime you help other people because they are poor. When it is Thanksgiving that the only day that you are eating with your family.

Esteban Robles
6th Grade
Emory Elementary

I like Thanksgiving day because we travel mostly every year and spend the evening at my Uncle George's house. My Aunt Sofia cooks all kinds of desserts and especially the turkey turns out very delicious, but before we get our meal we gather and pray and give thanks for all that we have accomplished during the year and also to give thanks that my family is together. That's the most important thing.

George Flores

Thanksgiving means to me and my family is to thank God for the food and water. It also means, to see relatives that we don't see very often. That is what Thanksgiving is to me.

Joshua Estrada
6th Grade

To me Thanksgiving means to thank God for my family, a good meal, beautiful home, a warm bed, a clean school, and everything I own. It also means to thank everyone for everything they have done for me. That's what Thanksgiving means to me.

Mary Rivera

Thanksgiving is not my favorite holiday but it's up there. I would say it's my third favorite because it tells me things. I think of the holiday as a historical event. I say this because it goes back a long time to the Pilgrims I think about the food and say to myself that people where doing this 1,000's of years ago.

Michael Hill
6th Grader
Emory Elementary

Thanksgiving to me is a time to see some relatives who I haven't seen in a long time. It also means to spend more time with love ones. It some times means to be thankful for the food and what you have because there's people who don't have a house. Sometimes they don't have food or don't have a home. That's what Thanksgiving means to me.

Monica Moreno
6th Grade
Emory Elementary

Thanksgiving means to me like family reunion. It's when families get together to thank God that we're steal alife. To say thank you to the natives of America when they helped us to survive. To eat what ever religion you are. Now you know what Thanksgiving means to me.

Mario Olivares
6th Grade
Emory Elementary

I think Thanksgiving means a peacefull day with all your family and meeting new people. At my house my cousins and nephews come and my aunts and uncles and grandparents come. But at 6:00 we eat, at night. And I get another Thanksgiving with my Grandpa and Grandma because they do it for us. To be again with them, we invite them to birthdays and they invite us to Halloween and Christmas, Thanksgiving.

I love when we eat honey ham or turkey with potato salad with gravy mmm ... it is really delicious with cranberry sauce. And for desert is pumpkin pie or apple pie, cheesecake, with ice cream.

I think that Thanksgiving means about sharing, like the Pilgrims did and the Native Americans who taught them to use fish to grow thir plants. I think Thanksgiving means thanks for help and giving. Happy Thanksgiving.
Tahnee Ruthenberg
6th Grade
Emory Elementary

Thanksgiving means to me is thank God for giving me life, love, a nice family. Thanks God for giving my grandma life so she can live more with my big nice family. Thanksgiving is my first favorite Holiday because God helps us be together and stay alive. I love you God for taking care of my great-grandmother. I wish my grandma could be with me all my life.

Vanessa Mendoza

I think Thanksgiving mean is that the Pilgrims care to the Indian land and built house over on their land and the Pilgrims didn't know how to grow food to survive so the Indians taught them how to survive like them how make food so one day the Indians and the Pilgrims join together on Thanksgiving day an had a real big feast together and happily became friends

Robert Daniels
6th Grade
Emory Elementary

For me Thanksgiving means, all the family together thanking God for the love and peace we have, then we eat turkey and jam. Family that I don't see very often come to our house and we share this moment. After we eat, all the family start talking, the kids with the kids and the adults with the adults. But the main thing why Thanksgiving is important is to share and be together.
