More Just Fix It
Disintegrating sidewalk, now reinforced with rocks, will get proper repair

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

May 7, 2008

THE PROBLEM: Just Fix It has been disappointed every time we've heard this appeal: The sidewalk in front of my house is so bad, I can barely get out of my driveway. But then we heard from George and Margaret Brougham.

The Site: Cuca Street in Rancho Peñasquitos
The sidewalk in front of the Broughams' home on Cuca Street in Rancho Peñasquitos has disintegrated so much that they poured a bag of small rocks into a hole so they can back out of their driveway and passersby don't trip and fall at night.

Their problems don't end there. A 40-by-4 section of the street in front of the home is badly cracked. There is a nasty lip that rises 5 inches above the rest of the street.

George Brougham said he has contacted the city Street Division several times since the problems started about six years ago. Most recently, he said, he called asking if he could repair the sidewalk himself.

STATUS: The sidewalk will be repaired by the Street Division next month, said Hasan Yousef, the division's deputy director. Yousef said he is looking into the condition of the street.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Hasan Yousef, who can be reached at (619) 527-7504 or hyousef@sandiego.gov. The Street Division can be contacted at (619) 527-7500. We recommend asking for a service request number. Requests also can be filed online at apps.sandiego.gov/streetdiv.

IT'S FIXED: The sidewalk on G Street between 14th and 15th streets in downtown San Diego that looked like the work of a small child has been fixed.

As we wrote last month, the odd ramp made it impossible for wheelchairs to pass.

The private contractor who put in the ramp tried using a bag of ready-made asphalt to correct the problem, but the replacement was still steep and did not meet city and Americans With Disabilities Act standards.

The contractor went back late last month with a load of cement and did the job right.

WHO GOT IT DONE: Tony Khalil, a senior engineer with Neighborhood Code Compliance.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem that government hasn't taken care of despite your complaints? Whether it's a missing bus bench or an unkempt park anywhere in San Diego County, Just Fix It might be able to help.

Complaint forms are at justfixit.uniontrib.com, or call (800) 820-8714 to describe your problem.
