More Just Fix It
It's all or nothing for downtown streetlights

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

May 12, 2008

THE SITE: 10th Avenue in San Diego's East Village
THE PROBLEM: Streetlights are something you take for granted until they burn all the time or don't burn at all.

Daniel Wasil contacted us about many lights in San Diego's East Village and Gaslamp Quarter that burn all the time. Wasil said that given the city's financial troubles, it shouldn't waste money on electricity.

“I just don't want to pay for them,” Wasil said.

Brett Schaffter called about several streetlights on Pacific Highway between Cedar and Grape streets that haven't worked for many months.

STATUS: Just Fix It found 32 lights that were on during the day and passed our list on to Gary Gobel, electrical public works superintendent for San Diego's Street Division.

Gobel said “dayburners” are usually caused by faulty photocells. Rather than turning off, lights with faulty cells will stay on all the time until the problem is fixed. Workers have repaired the lights on our list plus some others they found.

The city pays a flat rate to San Diego Gas & Electric Co. for each streetlight in the downtown area, so the lights weren't costing the city more money. However, SDG&E urges the city to not waste electricity.

Most of the lights on Pacific Highway have been repaired. Gobel said one can't be fixed until construction in the area is completed. Fixing two other lights required excavation. That work was scheduled for this weekend.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Gary Gobel, who can be reached at ggobel@sandiego.gov. Requests for streetlight repairs can be submitted at (619) 527-7500 or apps.sandiego.gov/streetdiv.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem government hasn't taken care of despite your complaints? Whether it's a missing bus bench or an unkempt park anywhere in San Diego County, Just Fix It might be able to help.

Complaint forms are at just fixit.uniontrib.com, or call (800) 820-8714 to describe your problem.
