Warning lights in works at crossroads

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

June 9, 2008

THE SITE: Jackson and Twin Lake drives in San Carlos
ALMOST DONE: Installation has started on pedestrian warning lights at Jackson and Twin Lake drives in San Carlos.

Parents at Benchley-Weinberger Elementary School on Twin Lake Drive wanted an inexpensive stop sign. San Diego traffic engineers and Councilman Jim Madaffer, who represents the area, wanted warning lights that cost about $30,000.

Pedestrians will activate lights in the roadway and on signposts by pressing a button. The lights were supposed to be ready in January, but early bids were too high.

Senior Traffic Engineer Ahmed Aburahmah said the lights could be working by the end of this week. Classes at the elementary school end June 16.

Parent Richard Burg said he would still prefer a stop sign but will keep an open mind.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Ahmed Aburahmah can be reached at (619) 533-6670 or aaburahmah@sandiego.gov.

KUDOS: Linda Welsh contacted us about sidewalks near the San Diego Center for the Blind that posed tripping hazards. Welsh, who teaches at the center and uses a guide dog, knows this firsthand.

It didn't take long for the Street Division to grind down many uneven areas on El Cajon Boulevard and 59th and Esther streets.

“Tell them I said, 'Thank you,' ” Welsh said.

Students at the center are taken on walks so they can learn to get around independently.

WHO GOT IT DONE: Hasan Yousef, the Street Division's deputy director, can be reached at (619) 527-7504 or hyousef@sandiego.gov.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem government hasn't fixed despite your complaints? Whether it's a missing bus bench or an unkempt park anywhere in San Diego County, Just Fix It might be able to help.

Complaint forms are at justfixit.uniontrib.com, or call (800) 820-8714.
