Alert readers on the lookout for overgrown weeds as prime fire season nears

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

August 27, 2008

THE PROBLEMS: With prime fire season fast upon us, Just Fix It has seen a spike in calls about overgrown weeds.

Laszlo de Borondy is worried about tall weeds growing along San Pasqual Road between the San Diego Ostrich Farm, which he owns, and the Orfila Winery.

THE SITE: San Pasqual Road in San Diego's San Pasqual Valley.
De Borondy thought the large piece of roadside property belonged to the city of San Diego, so he said he called the city Fire Marshal's Office in early July.

Al Sargeant contacted us about tall weeds near the transition ramp from La Jolla Scenic Drive South onto eastbound La Jolla Parkway. The weeds obstruct the view of merging traffic, Sargeant said.

After contacting the city's Street Division, Sargeant was notified last month that the work was completed. But nothing changed, so he called the city again and asked us for help.

STATUS: We contacted the city's Street Division and Fire Marshal's Office. Fire officials said both areas needed to be trimmed.

The property on San Pasqual Road belongs to the Water Department, so it is responsible for trimming the weeds. We have a call in to Jim Fisher, deputy director of water operations.

The La Jolla weeds will be trimmed this week, said Hasan Yousef, the Street Division's deputy director.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Jim Fisher, who can be reached at (619) 533-3121 or jfisher@sandiego.gov. Hasan Yousef, who can be reached at (619) 527-7504 or hyousef@sandiego.gov. To report potential vegetation hazards on public or private property, call the Fire Department's brush and weed abatement section at (619) 533-4444.

IT'S GETTING FIXED: More speed limit signs for cyclists and skaters have been painted along the low wall separating the Mission Beach boardwalk from the beach. The work was done by the Street Division.

As we wrote early this month, many of the 8 mph signs north of the Belmont Park roller coaster had faded or been painted over.

And speaking of paint, Street Division workers removed a small section of red curb along Hornblend Street, near Ocean Boulevard in Pacific Beach. As we wrote last month, residents had asked the city to remove some of the red curb to allow parking for one more car.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Hasan Yousef.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem government hasn't fixed despite your complaints? Just Fix It might be able to help.
