SAN DIEGO – A car careened off a Rolando-area thoroughfare at about 100 mph Monday and fatally struck a pedestrian before slamming into a church, authorities reported.
The eastbound Acura veered off the roadway in the 6700 block of University Avenue about 4 p.m., jumped a curb and hit a man on the sidewalk, hurling him into a commercial parking lot, where he died, according to San Diego police.
The out-of-control black sedan continued on through a nearby intersection and crashed into a corner of Believe in God Ministries, winding up halfway inside the building, a dispatcher said.
The driver then jumped out of the mangled car and ran off to the southeast, into La Mesa.
A witness told TV reporters that the impact of the vehicle severed one of the pedestrian's arms and left him with extensive head injuries.
A few minutes later, patrol officers took a man into custody for questioning. It was not immediately clear if he was the suspected hit-and-run driver.
Police received reports that the vehicle may have been carjacked shortly before the fatal crash occurred.
