SAN DIEGO – A 50-year-old La Mesa man has been identified as the man struck and killed by a speeding motorist Monday on University Avenue.
Bernard Piotrowski lived on 68th Street, about three blocks away from the accident site. His neighbors said he was retired and did volunteer work. Piotrowski died in front of the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the San Diego neighborhood of Rolando.
A motorist driving a black Acura east on University Avenue at more than 100 mph struck Piotrowski, who was standing on the southwest sidewalk on University Avenue at 69th Street, before crashing into a small church.
The driver, later identified as Keith Johnson, 27, was detained after running from the wreckage and jailed on suspicion of felony manslaughter and hit-and-run.
Police said Tuesday they had no explanation for the actions of the motorist. The Acura was registered to a Riverside man. It had not been reported stolen.
