SAN DIEGO: A man who appeared to be in his 20s was fatally wounded in a shooting at a strip mall parking lot in the Birdland neighborhood yesterday, police said.

The man's name was not released.

People near Health Center and Starling drives called San Diego police about 3:15 p.m. to report hearing gunshots. A man reportedly was yelling for help and saying he had been shot. Paramedics performed CPR as they took him to Sharp Memorial Hospital less than a half-mile away. He died there shortly before 8 p.m.

Witnesses said the gunman may have driven away in a blue Acura. Police said the victim may have been with friends, who scattered at the shots but later returned to talk to officers.

Gang-unit officers and a homicide team were investigating. – P.R.
