SAN DIEGO – A suspected drunk driver led police on a chase Thursday morning in University City that ended when authorities used spike strips to stop the vehicle and a Taser to subdue the motorist.
The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was first reported by other drivers to be wilding swerving on Honors Drive about 8:30 a.m., San Diego police Sgt. Jim Shorr said.
Police were called and spotted the Jeep on Renault Street, where the driver, who appeared to be drinking alcohol, told officers he had no reason to live.
“He asked our officers to shoot him and then he sped off,” Shorr said.
Officers put down a spike strip and were able to stop the Jeep about 9 a.m. in the 2900 block of Renault Street.
“The driver, who weighed about 250 pounds, remained in the vehicle and was uncooperative with our officers,” Shorr said. “They had to use a Taser to subdue him.”
The man was taken into custody without further incident.
