SAN DIEGO – A 27-year-old driver was killed early Friday morning when his Volkswagen Jetta crashed on Interstate 5 in La Jolla and then was struck from behind by another car, the California Highway Patrol reported.
A passenger in the second car also was injured.
The Jetta was traveling south on I-5 just north of Gilman Drive when it crossed all four traffic lanes, caromed off an embankment and came to rest upside down in the right lane, said CHP Officer Rob Sanchez.
A short time later, a four-door Toyota Camry southbound in the right lane struck the Jetta, Sanchez said.
The driver of the Jetta was still inside the car and was killed. The victim's identity is being withheld by authorities until his family can be notified.
A passenger inside the Camry suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment, Sanchez said.
John Okief, 28, of Boise, Idaho, was booked into county jail on suspicion of felony driving under the influence causing injury, said Sanchez.
