ESCONDIDO – A man in a new, stolen BMW led officers on a chase after presenting an identification card at a driver's license checkpoint Monday.
The 21-year-old San Diego man approached Washington Avenue east of Citrus Avenue where police had set up the checkpoint from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
An officer asked him to present a driver's license but the man only gave an officer his identification card, police said.
The officer directed the driver to a secondary inspection area, and the man appeared to be parking the 500 series sedan with his female passenger. Suddenly, the driver stepped on the gas and sped off, police said.
Police chased the man several blocks and then the pursuit became a foot chase when the man abandoned the car.
A helicopter helped track the man about a half hour later.
Officers said they found a loaded firearm, a drug pipe and other contraband on the ground where the man jumped over a fence in an attempt to run away.
The car had been reported stolen in San Diego.
Police booked the man in the Vista jail. He faces several felony charges. There was no word on the female passenger.
