SAN DIEGO – A Lake Murray man was killed Friday in a motorcycle crash on Harbor Island, authorities said.

He was identified as Mitchell Downes Clogg III, 47, of San Diego, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.

Clogg was riding his Suzuki motorcycle on Harbor Island Drive at a high rate of speed around a corner when he slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting a truck pulling out of a parking lot about 4 p.m., authorities said.

He was thrown from the bike and struck the rear quarter panel of the truck.

He was taken to UCSD Medical Center, where he died.

Clogg, who worked as a sailing instructor at Harbor Sailboats, had been on his way to charter a moonlight sail for Women on the Water, a group that promotes women and boating, said his father, Mitchell Clogg Jr.

“He was a magnificent sailor,” his father said from his Mendocino home. “He had extraordinary confidence and extraordinary sense of responsibility toward the sea and sailing, and he conveyed it to people in a way that impressed them deeply and made it a pleasurable experience for them.”
