Teen accused in College area break-in, rape pleads not guilty

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

A 17-year-old youth accused of breaking into a College area home and attacking a woman who lived there pleaded not guilty Thursday to nine felony charges, including rape and sexual battery.

Chadrick Jarrod Robertson, who was charged as an adult, could be sentenced to 105 years to life in prison if convicted.

San Diego Superior Court Judge David M. Szumowski set Robertson's bail at $1 million and appointed the Public Defender's Office to represent him.

Attorneys did not discuss the facts of the case in open court. However, they did have a sidebar discussion with the judge that lasted several minutes.

San Diego police have said Robertson was arrested Monday evening during a traffic stop on suspicion of sexual assault. He is accused of raping a 47-year-old woman at knifepoint Aug. 13 in her 67th Street home.

The attacker entered through an unlocked kitchen window about 4 a.m. and demanded money from the woman in her bedroom. When she said she did not have any, he pulled out a knife and raped her, police said.

At one point, the woman struck her attacker on the head with a glass cup, and he responded by cutting her on a forearm and thigh.

Evidence collected from the scene matched the attacker's DNA, which was already in a local database, police said.

Robertson was released from a juvenile detention center days before his Monday arrest. Police said he has previous convictions for burglary and robbery in 2007.
