Bicyclist dies following hit-and-run

UNION-TRIBUNE BREAKING NEWS TEAM

11:58 p.m. December 2, 2008

ALPINE – The California Highway Patrol is asking for the public's help in finding a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 30-year-old bicyclist Tuesday.

Update

The bicyclist was identified Wednesday as Edward Costa, a 30-year old construction worker who lived in Alpine with his wife and two sons, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.

The victim was riding in the bike lane on eastbound Alpine Boulevard west of East Victoria Drive when he was struck about 4:50 p.m. by a vehicle also traveling eastbound, said California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings.

A vehicle traveling at a high speed, described as either a white truck or sport utility vehicle, hit the back of the bike, throwing the victim about 50 feet, Pennings said. The vehicle then ran over the bike and cyclist and the driver accelerated from the scene, leaving the victim in the road, he said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken by air ambulance to Sharp Memorial Hospital. He later died there, a Medical Examiner's investigator said.

Pennings said the vehicle will have significant right-side damage, including to the right headlights and right-side mirror. It may have a white California license plate with red lettering.

Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP at (619) 401-2000.

Pennings said the collision occurred near several security cameras and the video was being analyzed.
