DOWNTOWN -- Ed Ryan, who has been San Diego's city auditor and comptroller for more than 20 years, announced his retirement this week.
In a memo sent Monday to Mayor Dick Murphy and the City Council, Ryan said he was retiring from the job he has held since 1982 "to begin the next phase of my life." Ryan, 58, earns $176,519 a year.
Murphy, in a statement released by his press secretary, said Ryan's retirement "is being reluctantly accepted by me and everyone familiar with his outstanding performance."
Ryan is a certified public accountant and former assistant auditor for San Diego County.
