SPARKS, Nev. – It will be next year before developers who want to build a new casino outside the downtown area and the Interstate 80 corridor will learn whether they can do so.
The Sparks City Council has extended for 90 days its moratorium on the new casinos unless they have 200 hotel rooms.
At Tuesday night's special hearing on the ban, members voted 4-1 to reinstate the moratorium, with Councilman John Mayer dissenting. He was joined by Councilman Mike Carrington in a 3-2 vote to accept most of the recommendation of a special committee on casino zoning.
The committee proposed to limit casinos to currently master-planned, tourist-commercial areas. The council maintained its discretion to add tourist-commercial areas, which some council members said was likely east of town along the Truckee River.
