2 arrested after holdup, high-speed freeway chase

CARLSBAD: A man and woman from Chula Vista were arrested yesterday afternoon after leading police on a freeway chase where speeds reached 100 mph after an armed robbery of a motel.

The incident began shortly after 2 p.m. when a desk clerk at the Super 8 Motel on Pio Pico Drive reported a robbery to Carlsbad police. The clerk said a man asked the price of a room, then drew a handgun and demanded money.

Police said the man fled with an undetermined amount of cash in a blue Honda. A Carlsbad officer attempted to stop the car on Pio Pico, but the driver sped off.

As officers chased the car from Pio Pico to Carlsbad Village Drive and onto southbound Interstate 5, a passenger tossed a handgun out the window, police said.

Officers said they stopped the car on Interstate 5 just south of Via de la Valle in Del Mar. The driver was arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility; a passenger was taken to Las Colinas jail in Santee. No one was injured during the robbery or chase, police said.
