ENCINITAS: A speeding motorist slammed into the back of another vehicle and flipped over Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 5, critically injuring his passenger, the California Highway Patrol said.
Other cars were at a stop in heavy southbound traffic north of Encinitas Boulevard shortly after 1 p.m. Enrique Gonzalez, 27, of Ensenada, Mexico, was traveling about 80 mph in an Isuzu Trooper and wasn't able to stop in time to avoid rear-ending a Range Rover in the left lane, the CHP said.
Gonzalez's Trooper rolled onto its right side. His passenger, a 30-year-old woman also from Ensenada, suffered major injuries. Both were airlifted to a hospital. No one was injured in the Range Rover or the Chevrolet Astro van that the Range Rover rear-ended.
