Encinitas may enter ban on new billboards in code

SIGNONSANDIEGO

7:31 a.m. August 20, 2008

ENCINITAS: A ban on erecting new billboards in Encinitas may about to become official.

In April, the City Council voted unanimously for the ban to protect scenic views and community character. Tonight the council will consider the next step: placing the ban in the city's municipal code.

The ban took effect immediately after the April 23 vote because the council adopted an “urgency ordinance.” The city had received an inquiry about a permit for a new billboard and wanted to have the rule in place.

The city staff has finished revising the city's sign ordinance, which contains the formal language for the ban. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 505 S. Vulcan Ave. –T.M.
