Encinitas has best of races in N. County

I'm a racist.

It's politically incorrect to say it, but some races are obviously superior to others.

More Logan Jenkins Columns

Don't count on SDG&E being fall guy in fires: So this is how the end of the world starts. Not with a bang but with a . . . spark.

Sometimes, there should be crying in baseball: You want to know one of the dumbest cliches ever coined about the great American pastime? There's no crying in baseball.

Driver's turn of the wheel changes protest: Note: This column first appeared Thursday in the Our North County editions of the newspaper.

A turn of the wheel changes protest: Before we pardon the dirty bird, consider this: Dissent is, by its nature, confrontational. If political protest doesn't get a critical rise out of a mass of citizens, it's not doing its job.

Take superlatives with the finest grain of salt: Unqualified superlatives are the worst of all. – William Safire “Application Filed for World's Largest Solar Energy Generating Plant: 30,000 Solar Dishes in the Southern California Desert.”

Cops shoot, then (sadly) the waiting game starts: Twenty-two months.

Caltrans decision was legal roadkill: 11-SD-005 PM 66.3-68.3 N/B. No, that's not a mistake.

Young man, you arrived at an exciting time: To: Austin From: Whatever Goofy Name You Want to Call Me Shhhh. Don't wake up if you're taking a nap.

Cemetery isn't a place to take dogs for a walk: A brick – the Gravely Offensive award – to the dog walkers and vandals who contribute to the blighted appearance of the Oceanview Cemetery in downtown Oceanside.

Slippery '3A' facts don't take high road: Out in the far northwest corner of Valley Center, the road rage boils down to the word “slip.”

Pardon him for gushing over role in the big story: I'm an accidental oracle. It's never praiseworthy to sing one's own praises, but this morning I can't help humming a few bars.

Ambitious Democrats' fate lies in GOP hands: The 98-pound Democrats, used to getting sand kicked in their faces by buffed GOP bruisers, are making a show of flexing their tiny muscles in North County's inland capital.

Same-sex weddings just as mundane: They were a study in sartorial contrast, the first two pairs of gay couples to be legally married in North County.

All they need is the free market and a drill: I love to cover North County's ruling class for at least one major reason. Political purity.

Pricey study of initiative has stink of propaganda: A brick – the $30,000 Foregone Conclusion award – to the San Marcos City Council for commissioning an outside consultant's report to embroider the council's well-telegraphed position: A growth-checking initiative, if approved by voters in November, would be a royal pain in the gluteus maximus.

Hoping to be left holding the bag: I don't leave home without one. Keys, wallet, cell phone, dark glasses, leash . . . and plastic bag.

Torrey Pines is the test for golfers young and old: No matter how many times you see it in print or watch it on TV or hear it said, it's just amazing.

Election an appetizer for meatier Nov. vote: Tuesday's was an election for the rock-ribbed voters, the lean and the mean of the electorate, not the flighty will-o'-the wisps who blow in only when they smell national sizzle in the sweepstakes.

Slicing a legal hot potato to avoid PR blame: District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis sliced a hot potato in half and handed the hotter half to the state Attorney General's Office.

Neighbor has bumpy ride with dealership: Audrey Wells has things to smile about, not the least of which is Morgan, the great-grandson she sometimes baby-sits in the modest Escondido three-bedroom house where she's lived for 40 years.

Van Deerlin shared his memories of Oceanside: I first met Lionel Van Deerlin in 1960 on the roof of the U.S. Grant hotel. My father and I had climbed up to better see John F. Kennedy delivering a stump speech in the Plaza below. On the roof ahead of us, reporting for broadcast, was Van Deerlin, my dad's city editor at the San Diego Daily Journal during the late 1940s.

A thriving business, dream home, hearts broken by map line: To you and me, it's a line on a county map.

What city attorney's race could look like: A nice, warm post-mortem beats cold numbers. Thanks to polls, election results are so predictable.

Short story offers hope for pit bulls' future: The first fictional dog I ever knew was the Kid, “the best fighting bull terrier of my weight in Montreal.”

Community Sports

Waiting his turn: He's been to every backwoods ballpark from Frisco to Fremont and back again. He's a veteran of seedy hotels, surly crowds and just one of many trying to get his shot in the major leagues.

Temecula/Riverside

Two dead in Thermal crash: A motorist died in a two-vehicle crash in unincorporated Thermal, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said Saturday.

Metro

Pride parade focuses celebration on same-sex marriage: All the familiar trappings, the flamboyant and the tongue-and-cheek, were there. The buff guys in gold sequins. The leather-clad women riding Harley Hogs. The vendors hawking necklaces with oversized rainbow-colored beads.

Traffic

Wildfires 2007

Insurers adding fire-retardant gel as policy option: Bill and Marisa Rastetter of Rancho Santa Fe are convinced that their 5,400-square-foot home would have been destroyed during the October wildfires if not for a homeowner's insurance policy that offers an extra level of protection in wealthier neighborhoods.

Just Fix It

Even without license plate, abandoned trailer could be tagged and towed: THE PROBLEM: Some problems are more challenging than others. This one was easy. A trailer with solar-powered lights that direct cars around construction zones had been parked on Gold Coast Drive west of Black Mountain Road in Mira Mesa since early June.
