LOS ANGELES – An 18-month-old girl who was hit in a drive-by shooting while sitting in her car seat has died, authorities said.
The toddler died just before 7 p.m. Monday at Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach from wounds to the face, said police spokesman Officer Steve Lopez.
The girl's mother, Rebekah Harris, was dropping off a man at an intersection Sunday night when a car pulled up and about 10 shots were fired, said police Detective Sal LaBarbera.
The little girl, who was in the back seat of the vehicle, was hit in the face, LaBarbera said. Harris and another child, a 4-year-old boy, were not hurt.
The man, Hollis Roberts, 25, was in critical but stable condition with wounds to the chest and leg, LaBarbera said.
Earlier Monday the girl's mother pleaded for public help in solving the crime, saying at a news conference that her child was dying.
“She was an innocent bystander, and she shouldn't have been hit,” Harris said. “And I just ask that anyone that knows anything please come forward because my daughter is losing her life over this and she didn't deserve this.”
