About 1,500 gallons of fuel spills into S.F. Bay

ASSOCIATED PRESS

5:49 a.m. May 14, 2008

MARTINEZ – The Coast Guard says about 1,500 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel has spilled into San Francisco Bay after a tugboat hit a refinery fuel line.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman says the fuel spilled into the bay after the boat hit a transfer line a little after 1:00 a.m.

The line is used to transfer fuel from Tesoro Petroleum's Golden Eagle Refinery in Martinez to barges.

Two Coast Guard vessels are on the scene to assess the spill. The Coast Guard has also deployed a boom and will use skimming equipment to try to remove the fuel.

None of the four crew members on board the tugboat were hurt. They are being held at the scene.

The Coast Guard had no assessment yet on possible damage to wildlife.
