MOUNT BALDY VILLAGE – Hard work by firefighters paid off Thursday as their containment lines held a 340-acre wildfire on towering Mount Baldy despite gusty wind and hotter, drier weather, officials said.
“It got pretty breezy today but it didn't seem to have too much of an impact on the fire,” said U.S. Forest Service spokesman Robert Brady said.
The blaze on the flanks of the 10,064-foot mountain was 25 percent contained.
Extra hand crews helped put lines around the fire to protect homes to the south, and crews spent the day putting out embers at the edge of the fire in the San Gabriel Mountains 45 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
Highs in the area were expected to reach the upper 90s Friday.
