UNION-TRIBUNE

October 27, 2007
Staff writer Hank Wesch's recap of yesterday's Breeders' Cup World Championships races:

$1 MILLION FILLY & MARE SPRINT

What happened: Maryfield produced a huge stretch run down the middle of a sloppy track to overtake 43-1 shot Miraculous Miss after 1-2 favorites La Traviata and Dream Rush burned each other out contesting a sizzling early pace.

What it means: Victory in his first BC start for 24-year-old Florida-based jockey Elvis Trujillo and distinction of first-ever BC Friday race winner for 6-year-old mare Maryfield.

What they said: “(Trujillo) rode her like he's won 20 Breeders' Cups already. So confident, so cool, so relaxed.” – Maryfield trainer Doug O'Neill.

RESULTS

Six furlongs, Purse $1,125,000, 3-year-olds and up. Time 21.290, 44.190, 56.840, 1:09.850.

$1 MILLION JUVENILE TURF

What happened: Nownownow, last of 12 halfway through the one-mile race, got rolling and managed to outfinish favored Achill Island, who had closed strongly from 10th at the half-mile mark.

What it means: First BC win, in sixth mount, for jockey Julien Leparoux, salving disappointment of sixth-place finish on favored La Traviata one race earlier.

What they said: “I moved at the quarter pole and I knew I was going to get it in the stretch. The turf is not too deep, it's just wet.” – Leparoux.
