Day at the races

UNION-TRIBUNE

October 27, 2007
Staff writer Hank Wesch's take on today's Breeders' Cup World Championships races:

$2 MILLION JUVENILE FILLIES

The winner is: Izarra

Scenario seen: Enough pace to set up her late run and Izarra doesn't fight with Espinoza early on as she did in Oak Leaf at Santa Anita.

Fly in the ointment: Quick-from-the-start Indian Blessing might be uncatchable if she takes to slick racing surface.

$2 MILLION JUVENILE

The winner is: War Pass

Scenario seen: Undefeated (3-for-3) favorite, with one win on an off track, takes 'em wire-to-wire and becomes early '08 Derby favorite.

Fly in the ointment: Globalization, Wicked Style could create pace duel and set up a closer for the upset.

$2 MILLION FILLY & MARE TURF

The winner is: Passage of Time

Scenario seen: Improving 3-year-old from Europe gets classic Euro trip, stalking from close range, then showing striking late turn of foot.

Fly in the ointment: Cal-bred Nashoba's Key might be tough, ornery and good enough to face world's best, stay unbeaten.

$2 MILLION SPRINT

The winner is: Idiot Proof

Scenario seen: Track record holder for Monmouth course needs to handle mud, but so do the rest of them.

Fly in the ointment: Smokey Stover, others are fast and have off-track experience, plus wild things tend to happen in this race.

$2 MILLION MILE

The winner is: Excellent Art

Scenario seen: Went 1-for-4 vs. Group I competition in Europe, has handled soft turf before and, as 3-year-old, gets weight break vs. older.

Fly in the ointment: After Market looks primed if connections don't pull plug because of soft-ground wariness.

$2 MILLION DISTAFF

The winner is: Octave

Scenario seen: Always-competitive filly gets the clean trip and racing luck needed for third Grade I victory in five starts since June.

Fly in the ointment: Eight Grade I winners make this one of the deepest fields in BC history – any of 'em could win.

$3 MILLION TURF

The winner is: Dylan Thomas

Scenario seen: $6 million-plus earner becomes first to complete Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-Turf double.

Fly in the ointment: Red Rocks, defending race champion, and Fri Guy, English Channel are threats for front-running victory steal.

$5 MILLION CLASSIC

The winner is: Street Sense

Scenario seen: Derby winner tops stellar cast with another Calvin “Bo-rail” inside move in the stretch.

Fly in the ointment: “Old man” at 4 Lawyer Ron and three rival 3-year-olds make as much sense as Street.
