Hockey in San Diego

UNION-TRIBUNE

June 30, 2006

Hockey has had numerous incarnations in San Diego since 1944:

1944-50 Skyhawks compete in Pacific Coast Hockey League

1966-74 Gulls founded by Bob Breitbard, same year San Diego Sports Arena opens, and join Western Hockey League

1974-77 Mariners compete in World Hockey Association

1977-79 Mariners/Hawks compete in Pacific Hockey League

1990-95 Gulls resurrected and compete in International Hockey League before owner Fred Comrie moves team to Los Angeles

1995-2003 Gulls re-form once more, playing in West Coast Hockey League, where they win championships in 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2003

2003-2006 Gulls join ECHL when that league merges with WCHL
