FRESHWATER
Barrett: Bluegill outperforming bass here, where expectations are far outweighing fish lately. The 112 anglers reported 100 bass, 294 bluegill and 5 crappie, all released. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
Chollas: Some of the best fishing in the county right now, and the good thing is, it's for kids only. The 442 young anglers reported 63 bass, 49 rainbow trout, 215 channel catfish, 254 bluegill and 36 carp. Pepperoni pizza working well for channel catfish. Open daily to youngsters 15 and under. San Diego Fly Fishers sponsors a Lend-A-Rod program Sundays, and it includes free bait and tackle and fishing tips.
Cuyamaca: World-class fly-fishing for trout in the East Lake, according to supervising ranger Willard Lepley. Bass turned on here, too, with spawning in the shallows. Big catfish biting in the South End. Mitchell Hill, San Diego, 6-12 bass, Power Bait, Finger Jetty. Scott Bruckner, Bonsall, 4-0 rainbow trout, Mepps, Dock. Delacruz Family, Ramona, 20 trout, 26 pounds with the largest a 2-0, night crawlers, Pumphouse Cove. Bullhead-A-Thon is on, with prizes for the most bullheads taken from the lake. Register at the tackle shop. Open daily.
Dixon: Trout biting in deeper water. Night fishing starts June 15 following the plant of 2,000 pounds of channel catfish. Open daily.
El Capitan: The 545 fishermen reported 41 bass (401 released), 435 crappie, 75 channel catfish, 45 blue catfish. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday for fishing, boating and water contact (Jet Skis, wakeboarding and water-skiing).
Henshaw: Good catfish bite, with some crappie and bluegill still being caught. Small bass hitting some. Tim Savage, San Diego, 5 channel catfish, including a 4-8. John Jolly, Ramona, 5 channel catfish, with a 6-pounder. Open daily.
Hodges: The 190 anglers checked reported 2 bass kept (32 bass released), 29 crappie, 19 channel catfish and 9 bluegill. Dan Novak, Fallbrook, 2 bass, 10.90 with a 6.05, Senko, Bernardo Bay. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
Jennings: Fish with a Kid Day, sponsored by Aim Marine, set for 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, a free fishing day in the state (no license required). No permit fees here, either. Free pontoon boat rides for kids and parents, prizes and a free barbecue at the dock starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers needed to assist kids. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday; also Friday and Saturday nights for night fishing.
Loveland: The 90 anglers reported 1 bass kept (18 bass released), 84 bluegill. Open daily.
Miramar: The 195 anglers checked reported 13 bass kept (46 released), 47 channel catfish, 43 rainbow trout, 6 bluegill. Justin Willey, Rancho Bernardo, 11.75 bass, night crawler, and Collin Masters, Scripps Ranch, 2 channel catfish with a 4.95 best, night crawlers, all from Moe's Hole. Open Saturday through Tuesday.
Morena: Very good catfish fishing, with trout fishing fair. Bryce and Joe Vinson, Descanso, 9 trout, 9-4 total, night crawlers. Open daily.
Murray: The 325 fishermen checked reported 7 bass kept (145 released), 1,245 bluegill. Matt Lowery, El Cajon, 10.75 bass, plastic worm, Del Cerro. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday; every day for shore fishing.
Otay, Lower: The 648 anglers checked reported 5 bass kept (67 released), 3,276 bluegill, 76 crappie and 30 channel catfish. Jim Nethers, National City, two days, 263 bluegill, meal worms, including a 2.90, Otay Arm. Charlie Lane, Compton, 97 bluegill, 31.75 with a 1.55, crickets, Otay Arm. Michael Oliver, San Diego, 40 bluegill, with a 1.50, crickets, Otay Arm. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
Otay, Upper: The 31 anglers reported 31 bass, all released. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday to catch-and-release fishing, barbless hooks only.
Poway: Trout hitting deep, and channel catfish good at the Log Boom. Dave Mayer, San Diego, 5-0 trout, night crawler, boat. Cory Anderson, Vista, 5-0 and 4-8 trout, night crawler, Bucktail Bay. Night fishing starts June 24. Fishing permits reduced to $2 for adults Saturday and free to kids 15 and under in honor of National Boating and Fishing Week. Boat rentals also discounted on a day when the state waives the fishing license requirement for all. Open Wednesday through Sunday.
Santee Lakes: Sophia Sedlacek, 7, Kristin, 11, and Ashley Stein, 13, Santee, all caught their first fish, bluegill, on mealworms in Lake 3. Big carp stirring in Lake 1. Night fishing Thursday on Lakes 1 through 4, with fishing allowed 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for juniors, $2 for a second pole stamp. Lanterns required. No radios permitted. Night fishing will be permitted June 23, July 7 and 21 and Aug. 4 and 18. Open daily.
San Vicente: The 186 fishermen reported 22 bass kept (356 released), 355 bluegill, 60 redear sunfish, 57 channel catfish and 3 rainbow trout. Open Thursday and Friday for fishing, Thursday through Sunday for water contact.
Sutherland: The 132 fishermen checked reported 1 bass kept (58 released), 60 channel catfish, 33 crappie, 13 bluegill and 2 blue catfish. New launch ramp is now a one-lane asphalt road below the concession stand. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Sweetwater: The 124 fishermen reported 13 bass kept (71 released), 50 bluegill, 58 carp, 22 crappie and 1 channel catfish. Open Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Wohlford: Channel catfish took over for bass here, with good action at the west end of the lake. Jason Olsen, Oceanside, 10-8 channel catfish, mackerel, West Buoy Line. Ron Bucholz, Escondido, 9-3 channel catfish, mackerel, West Buoy Line. Bob Noucousky, Camp Pendleton, 2-5 crappie, shiner, Boat Dock cove. Lake will get 2,000 pounds of channel catfish June 15. Open daily.
Eastern Sierra: Steve Sarmiento reports very good fishing for cutthroat trout at Silver Lake in the June Loop. His grandchildren caught limits of rainbow trout every day, with Kaelyn, 5, catching her first limit of trout in about two hours. Bryan, 7, had his in 45 minutes, he said. His wife, Mary, caught four rainbow trout, and Sarmiento landed the top fish, a 6-4 rainbow. Cutthroats and browns hit Thomas Buoyant spoons and Power Worms.
OCEAN FISHING
Pt. Loma Sportfishing, H&M Landing, Fisherman's Landing: 27 anglers, two full-day boats: 1 lingcod, 135 sand bass, 10 barracuda, 60 sculpin. 39 anglers, two three-quarter-day boats: 2 yellowtail, 22 calico bass, 211 sand bass, 12 barracuda, 2 rockfish, 91 sculpin. 76 anglers, two half-day boats: 98 calico bass, 2 barracuda, 11 rockfish.
Seaforth: 59 anglers, two three-quarter-day boats: 1 white sea bass, 2 yellowtail, 27 barracuda, 15 calico bass, 283 sand bass, 12 sculpin; 85 anglers, two half-day boats: 1 bonito, 41 barracuda, 182 calico bass, 3 rockfish, 1 lingcod, 47 mackerel.
Islandia: 56 anglers, two half-day boats: 2 yellowtail, 61 barracuda, 70 calico bass, 100 mackerel, 11 rockfish.
Oceanside: 45 anglers, two half-day boats: 22 sand bass, 26 calico bass, 1 whitefish.
Private Boaters: Jeff Kuntz landed a 45-pound white seabass from the Point Loma kelp Sunday on Capt. Bill Coleman's 14-foot aluminum boat. Kuntz used a Fish Trap lure, and nearly lost the fish when it swam into the kelp. They also caught limits of calico bass.
Bay Fishing: Chris Seavello took this report as part of his managing duties with the SDG&E fishing club: Richard Jones and Robin Berda caught and released 198 fish between 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Most were spotted bay bass, but they also caught one halibut and five sand bass. They used swimbaits and crankbaits and fished the weed flats south of the Coronado Bridge.
Long Range: Report from Bill Roecker of Oceanic Productions: The American Angler, with Capt. Brian Kiyohara, reported good fishing on an eight-day run to Alijos Rocks and other areas. Russ Jacobs, Pomona, 60-pound yellowfin. Capt. Tommy Rothery reported good fishing the first day of a three-day trip offshore for albacore and bluefin. But the weather knocked the action off the second day. The trip produced three bluefin over 45 pounds, the largest being a 55-pounder for Joe Kovach of Lake Havasu. Capt. Jeff DuBuys checked the Independence in with a good catch of yellowtail after a six-day trip. Richard Lyse, 41.4-pound yellowtail.
East Cape: Billfish are spread from Punta Pescadera to Los Frailes, and fishing is slow. Tuna moved closer, about 10 miles off Rancho Leonero, but only fair fishing for them, too. Big dorado over 60 pounds showing, but not many. Only saving grace is that BIG roosterfish, pargo and pompano are close to the beach from Leonero to Las Barracas. Roosters are averaging 30 pounds, with an occasional monster more than 70 pounds, and pargo up to 30 pounds being wrestled in.
Cabo San Lucas: Unseasonably cold currents continue to cool catches here. Tuna bite is fair.
NOTEWORTHY
No License Day: Fishermen don't need a license to fish Saturday as part of National Fishing and Boating Week. Several lakes, including Jennings and the San Diego City Lakes, have waived the daily permit fee Saturday.

Grunion: Catching season for grunion reopens tomorrow with the first run of the season expected from 10:25 p.m. to 12:25 a.m. Runs start about 45 minutes later each night through Saturday night. Next run is June 23-June 26. Grunion must be taken by hand. Digging holes in the sand to trap them is prohibited. No limit, but take only what you can use.
Marlin Seminar: Southwestern Yacht Club's annual Marlin Seminar is tomorrow night at 7 at the club at 2702 Qualtrough St. Speakers include Capt. Pete Groesbeck, Bob Vanian, Dan Hart, Capt. Carl Schlieder, Capt. Walt Gutjahr and Capt. Bob Woodard.
