UNION-TRIBUNE

October 24, 2007

Dahir Mohamed
Cross country
Hoover

Competing in the small-school division of the Jaguar Invitational, the Cardinals junior overcame the loss of a shoe with a mile to go to capture his race at Escondido's Kit Carson Park in 16 minutes, 53 seconds. Mohamed won the 3.1-mile race by six seconds.

Erik Middleton
Football
Oceanside

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound senior defensive end recorded seven tackles and recovered a pair of fumbles during the Pirates' 49-7 rout of Avocado League rival Rancho Buena Vista. The Pirates defense has allowed just one touchdown in the past two games.

Jamie Yam
Golf
Rancho Bernardo

The senior had three birdies against Westview in a round of 2-under 34 and three more birdies against San Pasqual in another round of 34. Her score helped set a school record of 188 against the Eagles. Both rounds were played at the Rancho Bernardo Inn.

Lauren Birks
Volleyball
La Jolla Country Day

Birks, a 5-foot-11 freshman middle blocker, led the Torreys to the final of the Southern California Invitational, the best finish by a local team. La Jolla Country Day (19-12) was paced by Birks, who was named to the all-tournament team.

Ramadan Ahmad
Football
El Cajon Valley

The 5-foot-10, 240-pound two-way lineman rarely leaves the field. That wasn't good news for El Capitan as the Braves upset the Vaqueros 29-21. A three-year starter, Ahmad was a ruffian on defense. The senior forced one fumble, recovered two loose balls and had five tackles.

Jacob Smith
Water polo
Coronado

The senior, who is being recruited by Stanford, Cal, USC and UCLA, helped top-ranked Coronado defeat Bishop's and Cathedral as well as Long Beach Wilson. Smith collected nine goals, two assists, seven steals and three ejections drawn. His goal in the final two seconds beat No. 2 Bishop's.

High school Athletes of the Week are awarded through a partnership between the U-T and the Hall of Champions.
