John Carroll, Oceanside
Of the many things Oceanside's football team achieved this season – an Avocado League crown and the school's 10th San Diego Section title to name a couple – none will be as memorable as the Pirates' 28-14 win over Novato in the Division II State Football Championship Bowl at the Home Depot Center in Carson. “It has finally set in,” Carroll said. “I think the school and community all appreciate the good fortune we had to be in that situation. You never forget, but you can't live in the moment forever, and it's time to move on and start thinking about next season.” After opening the season with a loss to Helix, Oceanside ran off 12 straight wins en route to the bowl championship.
Dawn Lee, Cathedral Catholic
Lee coached the Dons soccer team to a 24-2-5 record this year that included a Western League championship, a San Diego Section Division III title and a victory in the inaugural Southern California Regional Division II championships. “We just hung the banners the other day and that made it feel real,” Lee said. “I still can't believe that it's already over and it's that bittersweet sadness that comes with the end of the year. It was a very exciting season and it just seems to keep going with all of these accolades. It's very flattering.” Lee's teams have won four straight section titles, and she's had a hand in coaching 15 of the past 18 champions. Seven girls from this year's team have received college soccer scholarships.
