LONG BEACH – Brian Matusz pitched a three-hitter and struck out 10 to give San Diego a 5-0 victory over California on Friday in the Long Beach regional NCAA tournament.

Matusz (12-2) limited the Golden Bears to a first-inning single, a double in the fifth and a single in the ninth. The 6-foot-5 left-hander retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced.

Sean Nicol had three hits for the Toreros (42-15) and James Meador, Josh Romanski and Jose Valerio each had two.

Cal's Tyson Rose (7-4) gave up nine hits and five runs in 6 2-3 innings.

The Toreros moved in front to stay on Nicol's RBI double with two out in the sixth inning, the broke the game open with a four-run seventh.

Cal (33-20) had its best scoring chance in the fifth inning when Blake Smith doubled and was sacrificed to third, but San Diego second baseman Kevin Hansen threw him out at the plate as he tried to score on an infield grounder.

Matusz became the Toreros' career strikeout leader, surpassing Gary Myron's record set in 1971. Matusz has struck out 141 this year and 397 in his career. He lowered his ERA to 1.58 for the season.

The Toreros next play on Saturday, facing the Long Beach State-Fresno State winner. Cal will meet the loser in an elimination game.
