San Diego's all-important quest for a new airport to replace Lindbergh Field has reached a decisive turn. Before the year is out, the regional airport commission will propose a site, and voters will be asked to give it a thumbs-up.

    Senate boss key to saving infrastructure plan

    When Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced his push for a massive, 10-year infrastructure program to help California improve roads, port facilities, levees and schools for the 21st century, the reaction was almost universally positive. While there was concern over the scale of the proposal – even for California, a $222 billion undertaking is daunting – most folks agreed the general idea was one whose time had come.

      Offenses are in the eyes of the offended

      Thanks to the controversy over the Danish cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, people the world over find themselves in a familiar but uncomfortable spot: One group is offended by something, and another can't wait to inform them they should cool off, and that they have no right to take offense.
