Ban on tinted windows puts brakes on drivers

STAFF WRITER

TIJUANA – Hundreds of drivers have been stopped in Tijuana and ordered to remove after-market tint from the windows of their vehicles this week after a new law intended to help reduce crime went into effect. The city law bans tinted windows on vehicles driven in Tijuana, although those that were manufactured with darkened glass are exempt, said Juan Guizar, a spokesman for the city.

    BALBOA PARK – Even after Alzheimer's disease dulled his memory, Bob Wilson still got a kick out of seeing the street sign “Bob Wilson Drive” in front of the San Diego Naval Medical Center in Balboa Park. As a congressman in the late 1970s, Wilson led the Navy's fierce fight against state and local officials to build the new hospital on 36 undeveloped acres near the original 1922 complex.

        SAN DIEGO – Retiree Joan Milardo said she and her husband have lived in Mira Mesa for 20 years and are enjoying their retirement there. But the good life in the community is fraying, she said. “Infrastructure – I think our roads are a mess,” Milardo said this week outside the Mira Mesa Branch Library. “I'm sure there are problems everywhere else, but here the roads are atrocious.”

          Women's jail may get $100 million from state

          SANTEE – A proposal for a new women's jail in Santee received a major funding boost yesterday as the state announced tentative approval of $100 million for the project. The state's Corrections Standards Authority placed the county's proposal for a new, 1,216-bed jail in Santee high on a list of recipients of $750 million in state bond revenue.

            Neighbors want speeding vehicles to slow down on street

            Jim Boydston and his neighbors are tired of cars and buses speeding along Cowley Way in San Diego's Bay Park. Boydston has a file documenting his neighbors' efforts dating back 14 years to slow down traffic on the 25-mph-speed-limit street south of Field Street. His latest push started early this year with e-mails to Councilwoman Donna Frye's office.
