- Letters to the editor
Regarding “SDSU drug sting draws scorn, praise” (A1, May 8):
San Diego State University Professor Carole Kennedy is disturbed that her school's president “unilaterally allowed” undercover agents to run their drug sting operation on campus. Does she think the matter should have been put to committee vote?
- RISING FOOD PRICES
Multiple causes but no easy solutions A little over a year ago, tens of thousands of Mexicans protested rising corn prices in what became known as the “tortilla wars.” Today, unrest over rising food prices has spread globally, and governments are scrambling to respond to this crisis and feed their poorest citizens.
- A long-term plan for improving education
Was it irony that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's Committee on Education Excellence report was released the day before school districts had to give mandatory layoff notices to their teachers – a report that calls for as much as $10.5 billion in additional funding for changes to the system–at the same time that the governor also is proposing more than $4 billion in cuts because of the budget crisis?
- Cruelty and our criminal justice system
Few examples better illustrate the vindictive nature of the American criminal justice system than the case of Susan LeFevre, or Marie Walsh, as she was know in San Diego.
- CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER THE WASHINGTON POST
How Clinton lost the nomination By the time Hillary Clinton figured out how to beat Barack Obama, it was too late. When she began the race in 2007 thinking she was in for a coronation, she claimed the center in order to position herself for the real fight, the general election. She simply assumed the party activists and loony left would fall in behind her.
- DANIEL WEINTRAUB THE SACRAMENTO BEE
A conservative path to liberal ends Facing a shortfall that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has estimated at $20 billion, California Democratic lawmakers are looking for a way to raise tax revenue. They might want to adopt and modify an idea advocated by a conservative think tank – and increase tax revenue while lowering tax rates.
- Changing the state's energy dynamic
The creation of the California Institute for Climate Solutions, a $600 million new research institute created by the state Public Utilities Commission, demonstrates bold leadership on the seminal environmental and economic issue of our time – climate change.
- ELLEN GOODMAN THE BOSTON GLOBE
Bridging Obama's gender divide From time to time during this primary, I've wondered about Obama's mama. In a race that was so much about biography, about beliefs rooted in her son's “DNA,” she's made only cameo appearances.
