SHORT TAKES: REGIONAL EDITION
Superior Court hopefuls will answer questions

May 12, 2008

SAN DIEGO: Two candidates seeking seats on the San Diego Superior Court are expected to answer questions from members of the public tonight at an open house in La Jolla.

Evan Kirvin and Garry Haehnle are scheduled to take part in an open dialogue, which organizers said will help voters prepare for the June 3 primary election.

Kirvin, a deputy district attorney, is seeking to replace retiring Judge William Kennedy in court District 45. Kirvin's opponent is Robert Faigin, chief attorney for San Diego County Sheriff William Kolender.

Haehnle, a court commissioner and former deputy district attorney, is seeking to replace retiring Judge Michael Wellington in District 19. His opponent is Paul Cooper, chief counsel to San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne.

The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at a home at 7321 Rue Michael in La Jolla.

District begins process of revoking school charter

VALLEY CENTER: The Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District board has voted to start the process of revoking the charter for All Tribes American Indian Charter School.

Superintendent Lou Obermeyer told board members Thursday night that the Rincon reservation school hadn't adequately responded to concerns about how it keeps track of attendance or money.

Obermeyer said the district will schedule a public hearing on the revocation within a month, and then, if warranted, formally revoke the charter a month later. The school can appeal to county and state education officials.

Jerry Simmons, the school's lawyer, said the district hasn't given All Tribes administrators a fair chance to answer the allegations.

Graduation at the 62-student school, created for children living on North County Indian reservations, is scheduled for June 18.

Swimmer seriously hurt in dive into shallow water

LA JOLLA: An 18-year-old swimmer was seriously injured yesterday when he dived into shallow water and struck his head on sand, a San Diego lifeguard spokesman said.

After the accident at 2:40 p.m. near the end of Sea Lane at Marine Street Beach, the swimmer was unable to move his arms and legs, said Lt. Andy Lerum of the San Diego fire department. The injured swimmer was not identified because of privacy laws. He was in serious condition when taken to a hospital, Lerum said.–M.A.
