NL chatter

NOTABLE

Atlanta and Pittsburgh will play a split doubleheader today after their game yesterday was postponed by rain.

Cincinnati batted out of order in the ninth against the Mets after an earlier double switch, with backup catcher David Ross coming to the plate in the No. 8 spot instead of Corey Patterson. Ross flied out to right. Once Mets manager Willie Randolph informed the umpires of the mistake, the out was charged to Patterson after a prolonged discussion by the umpires, and Ross batted again. This time, he singled.

Milwaukee starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo will have surgery tomorrow to repair a torn ligament in his right knee and will likely miss the rest of the season.

BY THE NUMBERS

1 Times Houston's Miguel Tejada was hit by a pitch in his first 154 plate appearances this season.

2 Times Tejada has been hit by a pitch the past two days.

54 Home runs this season by Philadelphia, leading the major leagues.

WHO'S HOT

Hiroki Kuroda

Dodgers pitcher takes a no-hitter into the seventh against Houston. He allowed one run and one hit in 6 2/3 innings.

WHO'S NOT

David Ross

Reds backup catcher was a little too eager to get to the plate after double switch, batting out of order against the Mets.

QUOTABLE

“Batting out of order can be one of the more confusing rules, you have to really think it through. ... We wanted to make sure we were applying the rule correctly.”

– Plate umpire Dale Scott, after

Cincinnati batted out of order

against the Mets. It was the first

time it happened in Scott's 23

years as a major league ump.
