Padres review

May 12, 2008

BY THE NUMBERS

2 Straight wins for the Padres, for the first time since April 13-15.

5 Stolen bases by the Padres over the weekend, after they had only eight in the first 36 games.

8 Straight series – and 18 of 22 games – lost by the Padres before they won two straight to take the series from the Rockies.

50 Career multihit games for Kevin Kouzmanoff.

56 Consecutive runners who had successfully stolen a base against Chris Young, dating to September 2006, until Luke Carlin threw out Jonathan Herrera trying to steal second in the sixth inning yesterday.

TURNING POINT

Khalil Greene was hitting .217 with one RBI in his first 17 games at Petco Park this season before he hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Rockies starter Greg Reynolds to double the Padres' lead to 4-0.

KEY FACTOR

Maybe the Padres should take their pink Mother's Day bats to Chicago. Yesterday marked the first time since the 22-inning game of April 17 – and the first time in a nine-inning game since April 5 – that the Padres had double-digit hits at Petco.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

Chris Young: Held the Rockies scoreless until the Padres led 4-0.

Offense: Tadahito Iguchi went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. His single leading off the sixth triggered the three-run rally that expanded the Padres' lead to 4-0.

Pitching: Cla Meredith entered the game with the bases loaded and none out in the seventh and got Rockies catcher Chris Iannetta to ground into a double play. Although a run scored on the play, Meredith then struck out Clint Barmes, stranding a runner at third.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

Padres catcher Luke Carlin said the events of Saturday night really hit him in the ninth inning.

“When Trevor Hoffman was coming in,” said Carlin, “I turned around to (plate umpire) Ed Hickox and said: 'Can you believe this is my first game in the major leagues and I'm catching two Hall of Famers?'

“I couldn't have asked for a better story. It was special. It took most of the night for me to settle down.”

Yesterday, not even his first major league hit, an eighth-inning double, could top the events of the previous night.

“Getting that hit was awesome, but I don't think anything can add up to catching Maddux's 350th win plus Hoffman,” Carlin said. “I was really blessed.”

WHO'S HOT

Adrian Gonzalez: He is hitting .339 (20-for-59) with four doubles, five homers and 15 RBI over his past 14 games.

Tadahito Iguchi: The second baseman is hitting .352 (19-for-54) with three doubles, a triple and a homer and seven RBI over his past 13 games.

WHO'S NOT

Callix Crabbe: The versatile Rule V infielder, who was hitting .176, was designated for assignment yesterday, meaning the Padres have 10 days to move him if he's claimed by another team. If not, and if he's not reclaimed by Milwaukee, he could go to Triple-A Portland.
