THE SKINNY

This will be Estes' first major league start since April 5, 2006, when he suffered ligament damage that required elbow reconstruction surgery. He was 4-2 with a 3.67 ERA in six starts with Portland before he was promoted by the Padres on May 8. He worked 1-2/3 innings in relief that night and allowed two unearned runs.

“I've fought hard mentally and physically to get back,” the 35-year-old Estes said yesterday. “I had almost forgotten what it was like to prepare yourself to pitch every fifth day. I don't expect my arm to bother me, but it is in the back of my mind of course it is.”

Estes, a former Cub, is 4-9 with a 6.45 ERA in 20 career starts at Wrigley field. He is 5-3 lifetime with a 5.70 ERA against the Cubs. He is making his first start against the Cubs since May 7, 2004.

Marquis is 3-2 lifetime against the Padres, with a 3.47 ERA, and was 1-0 against the Padres last year while allowing only two earned runs over 13 innings in two starts. Right-handed hitters are batting .348 against Marquis while lefties are hitting just .267. With two outs and a runner in scoring position, rivals are 3-for-19 against Marquis.
