The University of California is failing at diversifying its undergraduate student population, according to a report presented to the governing board of regents in Los Angeles yesterday.
The yearlong study found minorities in the state don't have adequate access to UC preparatory courses required for admission to the university, said Michael Brown, chairman of the faculty Academic Senate.
Last year, the University of California admitted more than 57,000 students, of which 4 percent were black, 20 percent were Latino and less than 1 percent were American Indian. The percentages are slightly higher at UC San Diego, with 27 percent of those admitted being black and 37 percent Latino.

Hundreds of cars
used tainted gas
BAKERSFIELD – At least 450 drivers have reported having car trouble after buying tainted gasoline sold in Kern and Fresno counties in recent weeks.
Officials with the Kern County Department of Agriculture and Measurement Standards said gas produced by Kern Oil & Refining Co. contained sediment that plugged vehicle fuel filters and damaged fuel pumps. That gas was sold to at least 50 drivers at 25 stations in Kern County in late March and early April.
In the past week, more than 400 other drivers reported buying gas that was inadvertently mixed with diesel and delivered to at least 16 stations within 50 miles of Fresno.
Company representatives said the incidents are unrelated.
