CORONADO –
If the 5,000 sailors of the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan reach the Persian Gulf this summer, they'll focus their efforts on launching bombs against the enemy.
But in the few weeks before they deploy Monday from North Island Naval Air Station, it's been mostly about coffee, tomatoes and toilet paper.

A San Diego woman arrested in connection with the May 4 bombing at the downtown federal courthouse is accused of buying 4 pounds of gunpowder with a fake driver's license. Rachelle Lynette Carlock, 31, was arraigned yesterday morning in El Centro on eight felony counts.

Mayor Jerry Sanders yesterday ordered work to stop on Blackwater Worldwide's proposed military training facility in Otay Mesa. The mayor was prompted by a legal opinion issued earlier in the afternoon by San Diego City Attorney Michael Aguirre. The opinion found problems with Blackwater's permits.

After 15 years of planning, Chula Vista is on the verge of owning 345 acres it needs for a future four-year university and technology park in the eastern area known as Otay Ranch.
Planning Director Jim Sandoval and City Attorney Ann Moore spent the past two years negotiating with two major landowners, JPB and the Otay Land Co.

The San Diego Chicken Pie Shop is a local institution.
For more than 70 years it has attracted families, retirees, politicians, business leaders, cops, community big shots and common folks. Five of its regular customers are more than 100 years old.
