Enough to handle
No need for Congress to probe NFL scandal
Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., has it almost exactly right when it comes to the New England Patriots' cheating scandal and the NFL's ham-handed efforts to bury it as quickly as possible. Specter, an ardent Eagles fan, has blasted the league for its lack of candor. He has called for an independent investigation of the Patriots' videotaping of opponents' signals, contending the league cannot be trusted to tell the real story.

A trailblazer retires; a crusader blunders
Our congratulations go to Lonnie Kitch, San Diego's first female firefighter, who retired this week after 30 years of service. She graduated from the firefighter academy in 1978, on her second try. Kitch was rightly praised by Tracy Jarman, San Diego's first female fire chief, as having “paved the way for others, including myself.”
