Padres review

May 17, 2008

BY THE NUMBERS

0 Errors for Tadahito Iguchi in 107 games dating to June 17.

1 Hit for Ichiro Suzuki last night, ending a streak of 16 hitless at-bats.

2 Homers this season by Kenji Johjima, who also has two in nine career at-bats against Chris Young.

6 Sacrifice flies by Khalil Greene, 10 shy of the club record set by Mark Loretta in 2004.

TURNING POINT

The Padres scored three runs in the first inning for the first time since they got four against the Dodgers' Brad Penny on April 5 in the sixth game of the season.

KEY FACTOR

After the Mariners twice pulled to within a run, Chris Young allowed no runs and only two walks in the final three innings he worked.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

Offense: Brian Giles had his third four-hit game of the season, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI.

Offense II: Tadahito Iguchi had three hits, including a homer, and drove in two of the Padres' first four runs.

Pitching: Starting with Young, the Padres shut out the Mariners over the final six innings on two hits. But it was the troika of Cla Meredith, Heath Bell and Trevor Hoffman that closed out the game (no runs, four hits, five strikeouts in three innings).

Defense: Young was heads-up on a fifth-inning popup dropped by Josh Bard. Young picked up the ball and threw to second, forcing Raul Ibañez for the out.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

Four Padres on the disabled list are to begin rehab assignments this weekend, including three relievers who pitched yesterday at the Padres' extended spring training base in Peoria, Ariz.

The most notable of the four is catcher Michael Barrett, who is to join Triple-A Portland tomorrow. Barrett, who has been out since April 7 with a right elbow strain, will play five to 10 games with the Beavers.

“He has been hitting and running and Michael says his arm feels great,” Padres manager Bud Black said.

Right-handers Clay Hensley and Carlos Guevara will report to Portland. Guevara is to pitch tomorrow, Hensley on Monday. Left-hander Justin Hampson will report to Single-A Lake Elsinore, where he is expected to work tomorrow.

WHO'S HOT

Brian Giles: Is 7-for-9 with three doubles over his past two games, raising his average from .259 to .288.

Tadahito Iguchi: Is hitting .338 (22-for-65) over his past 15 games with three doubles, a triple, two homers and 11 RBI.

Cla Meredith: Has allowed one earned run over his past 15 outings for an ERA of 0.66.

WHO'S NOT

Adrian Gonzalez: Goes 0-for-5 and strands three runners in scoring position and is 0-for-12 in his past three games.
