SEATTLE – Is it opportunity knocking, or the bells tolling? The Padres limp into Petco Park tonight – minus, at least temporarily, Jake Peavy – after two disastrous trips to begin what at one time appeared to be a most promising part of their schedule.

For the second time in a month, the signature hole for next month's U.S. Open at Torrey Pines has been hit by vandals. In the latest incident early yesterday at the cliffside, par-3 third – the most photographed hole on the South Course – City Golf Manager Mark Woodward said workers arrived before dawn to find fresh footprints in the dew and heavy heel marks stamped into the surface of the green.

Trevor Graham won a silver medal for Jamaica in the 4x400-meter relay in the 1988 Olympics. He ran for St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, N.C., became a U.S. citizen and stayed in the area after his track career to coach some of the fastest men and women the world has known.
