Story-teller Van Deerlin left his mark
To say Lionel Van Deerlin was dedicated to public service was an understatement. Van, as he preferred to be called, contributed a column to the Union-Tribune or, earlier, the Tribune, for 26 years before his death on Saturday. A Democrat, Van Deerlin was asked to begin the column after he lost his seat in Congress to Republican Duncan Hunter in 1980.
