Army death: Pvt. Branden P. Haunert, 21, of Cincinnati, died Sunday in Tikrit after his vehicle struck an explosive. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

U.S. death in Afghanistan: Marine Cpl. William J.L. Cooper, 22, of Eupora, Miss., died Monday during combat in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

U.S. governors visit Iraq: Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels visited Iraq on Monday and yesterday. About 140 Nevada Army and Air National Guard members are in Iraq, mostly in Camp Bucca in southern Iraq. Indiana has the largest deployment of National Guard members in the Middle East. There are 4,133 Indiana National Guard members serving in support of the Iraq and Afghanistan operations. About 3,400 of them are members of the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, which deployed in March.

Suicide bombings: A female suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest killed a member of the U.S.-backed neighborhood police and wounded seven people at a police station in Rutbah, police said. A female suicide bomber attacked the house of Sheik Mutlib al-Nidawi, the head of the U.S.-backed neighborhood police of Mandili, killing his niece and wounding him and two of his guards, police said. A suicide bomber killed himself and three members of his family, including his wife and sister, and wounded two others when the police surrounded his house in western Fallujah, police said.

Mosul cleric killed: Gunmen in a car killed the cleric of a mosque in western Mosul, police said.

Roadside-bomb arrest: In Wahida, south of Baghdad, Georgian and U.S. soldiers captured a suspected leader of a cell Monday who was believed to be involved in a roadside-bomb attack that killed two Georgian soldiers this month, the U.S. military said yesterday.

Policeman rescued: Iraqi soldiers rescued a police recruit who was kidnapped Monday in an attack on a minibus that killed 11 recruits west of Mosul. One of the kidnappers was killed and another was detained in the rescue operation, an army source told Reuters.

Mortar attack kills 3: A mortar attack killed three Iraqi civilians and wounded nine others in Diyala province.

Drive-by shooting kills 5: Gunmen killed five U.S.-backed neighborhood policemen in a drive-by shooting on their vehicle in Duluiyah, police said.

Insurgent leader killed: U.S. forces killed a senior al-Qaeda in Iraq leader in Samarra and detained 20 others in different areas in Iraq on Monday and yesterday, the U.S. military said.

Aziz trial resumes: The trial of former Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz resumed yesterday in Baghdad. He is accused of playing a role in the execution of traders who allegedly broke price controls under Saddam Hussein.
