EVENTOS LATINOS
Best bet • Vicente Fernández, return of the king

May 22, 2008

Vicente Fernández is living a new era in his career.

Last year, when he released his latest album, “Para siempre,” Chente, as he's called, resurrected a 40-year-old career in ranchera music.

Fernández will sing the hits from that album and his classic songs when he performs Saturday at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre (formerly Coors) in Chula Vista.

“Estos celos,” the first single in the album produced by singer-composer Joan Sebastian, topped the charts in the United States, making it one of the greatest hits Fernández has known.

This month, the second single, “La derrota,” reached the top spot on Billboard's Mexican regional music charts.

DETAILS
Vicente Fernández

When: Saturday, 8 p.m.

Where: Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre (formerly Coors), 2050 Entertainment Circle, Chula Vista

Tickets: $50.85 to $126.85

Online: ticketmaster.com

And the title track, “Para siempre,” is the theme-song of the popular telenovela “Fuego en la sangre,” which airs on Univision.

Clearly, teaming up with Sebastian is yielding Fernández good results.

The 12 songs in “Para siempre” feature the basic elements of songs written by Sebastian: Romantic ballads that tell a love story in a simple way. Long gone are Fernández's trademark rancheras about machismo, getting drunk, and shoot-outs.

Even when his music keeps evolving, Fernández is still considered the king of mariachi. His name is synonymous with such classics as “La ley del monte,” “Volver” and “Por tu maldito amor.” Some consider him the modern version of ranchera king Pedro Infante. Others say he's the last true Mexican charro singing on stage.
