After 21½ miles and thousands of strides, yesterday's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon settled into a two-man game. Kenyans Simon Wangai and Leonard Maina, running side-by-side, across the street from SeaWorld, on the frontage road along the San Diego River. So what would decide the race? Socks.

The man who started it all, the godfather of modern American distance running, yesterday morning was sitting inside the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon's VIP tent near the MCRD finish line. SAN FRANCISCO – The Padres had a chance at their first series sweep of the season, which would have put them third in the forgiving National League West. But the Giants scored three runs off Trevor Hoffman in the 10th inning to win 4-3 yesterday before a spirited crowd of 33,867 alongside San Francisco Bay.
