U.S. OPEN NOTEBOOK
Now's a good time to shop at Torrey

UNION-TRIBUNE

June 3, 2008

For those who aren't attending the U.S. Open, or fans who want to get a head start on their shopping, the 39,000-square-foot U.S. Open merchandise pavilion at Torrey Pines will be open free to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

It will be the only on-grounds shopping opportunity for fans before the championship week begins Monday. There are 600,000 pieces of logoed merchandise. Shoppers are asked to follow signs to parking once they arrive at Torrey Pines.

Carlsbad clinic

Next Monday, TaylorMade Golf and Ashworth Golf will present a benefit junior golf clinic at the Carlsbad Golf Center.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen, former Masters champion Mike Weir and Victor Garcia, the father of Sergio Garcia, are expected to make an appearance. Renowned instructor Jim Flick will give a mini-clinic, and PGA and LPGA teaching professionals will be on hand to give lessons.

The clinic is from 4 to 6 p.m. Registration begins at 3:15 p.m. Cost is $20 per child. Proceeds will go to the North County Junior Golf Association.

Chip-ins

The Future Champions Golf Putting Championship will be held at 10 a.m. on June 22 at the Stadium Golf Center. The event, run by PGA teacher Chris Smeal, is free to kids 18 and under. Competitors must register in advance at futurechampionsgolf.com.
