United Airlines said yesterday that it will shut down its low-fare Ted airline, ground 70 planes, and cut as many as 1,100 jobs as surging fuel prices extend an industrywide contraction. United's second set of cutbacks in two months is a response to a projected $3 billion boost in its 2008 fuel bill.

A federal jury in San Diego found yesterday that Microsoft did not infringe on a video-compression patent held by Alcatel-Lucent, closing one piece of a dispute that dates to 2003, before Lucent Technologies merged with Alcatel and before Gateway, an original target of the suit, left San Diego for Irvine.
